The Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Concezione Immaculata) + My Favorites
Dec 08 The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is a public holiday, meaning most Catholics will be attending mass to honour Mary, mother of Jesus. Many consider Mary to be the greatest and holiest of saints, and she is especially well-loved in Italy.
Festa di San Ranieri / Luminaria + My Favorites
TBA Dedicated to the patron saint of Pisa, San Ranieri, this festival is truly an illuminating event. Over 70,000 candles are lit throughout the town, with majestic sights including the Leaning Tower as well as the Arno River, where the reflection of thousands of flames can be seen. The event starts at dusk on June the 16th, but stake out the best viewing spots early, especially around Ponte di Mezzo by the river. Fast and furious boat racing can be enjoyed the next day. Bridge Battle (Il Gioco del Ponte) + My Favorites
TBA Usually a serene place to sip espresso, the banks of the Arno River is the site of fierce competition on the last Sunday of June each year. The Bridge Battle dates back to the Middle Ages when northern and southern Pisans fought for supremacy by the main bridge. The violence of past rivalries is now replaced with an endurance contest, where members from each side try to push a wooden chariot or ram to the opponent's side. The traditional march through town should not be missed. Address: Main Bridge, Arno River, Pisa PI
