Pisa, PI at a Glance
To acknowledge Pisa only for its most famous attraction, the Leaning
Tower, is certainly a slanted perspective. Indeed, the tower is an architectural
phenomenon, and the trek up its 293 steps a worthwhile experience, but Pisa
also has impressive medieval architecture and lively streets that wind around
a busy university, markets and eateries.
The grassy square Campo dei Miracoli, or "Field of Miracles",
surrounds the instantly recognizable tower. Pisa's
Duomo (cathedral), is four layers of open-air arches trimmed with black
and white marble, and the treasure filled Duomo
Museum preserves its original features. The baptistery
has a splendid pulpit, and the walled cemetery decorated with several famous
frescos. A new attraction in the city—the Ancient
Ships of Pisa—conducts excavations that continue to dig up Roman vessels
dating as far back as the first century BC. After viewing Pisa’s quintessential
attractions, indulge in some shopping at a high-end boutique or sip espresso
in a sophisticated cafe on Via
di Borgo Stretto.
